Suncoasters vs Pebble Beach

The annual Challenge Match between the Suncoasters Club and Pebble Beach Club was played for the honor of winning the coveted Challenge Cup.

This was the fifth year the event has been held and the score to date was 4 wins for the men and 0 for the ladies.

With 16 teams taking part in the Challenge, competitive interest was shown by both clubs.

The result was a disappointment for the ladies who were more than a match for the men, winning 4 games, losing 3 and tying 1. They lost, however, as the winner was decided on points, of which the men scored 103 and the ladies 98. A very close Match! A vote was taken after the award was presented and it was decided that next year's Match will be decided on points, rather than games, won.

A delicious array of eats with drinks was provided by Christine Burbery and Lorna Ruggiero, and enjoyed by everyone afterwards. Thanks were extended to the Burberys for organizing this event once more.

Singles - February 10th

Cassie Krowl (pictured below) was runner up in Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club's Novice Tournament last year. This year, her game has improved even further and, after lawn bowling for only 8 months, she was a Finalist in the Suncoasters' Singles tournament.

After a hard-fought and very close match with Linda Hawken, she came out the winner, after over 30 ends of bowling.

Triples - Jan 17

This tournament, begun last November, culminated in the Finals with a match between evenly matched

teams consisting of

Marge Lange (Skip), Barb Mignona & Gretchen Meixner

and

Pat Smith (Skip), Gina Saxton and Carol Eyssautier.

It was an enthralling contest with the result in the balance until the very last end when Gretchen bowled two unbeatable bowls to clinch the match by just one shot.

Pairs - Jan 9-13

The finalists in the Pairs tournament which was played on Friday the 13th were

Gina Saxton (Lead) who partnered Marge Lange (Skip)

and Gail O'Sullivan (Lead) who partnered

Nantalie Lanouette (Skip).

It was an exciting match and the result was in the balance until the very end when the winners were Gina and Marge, pictured below (left to right).

Singles - February 20 to 27

An epic battle between well-established lawn bowler and winner of many championships, Bob Ferguson, and newer bowler - and last year's Singles winner - Joe Mignogna, took place on Monday the 27th of February.

With dozens of spectators and all other lawn bowling cancelled that afternoon, Joe led in the early stages of the match but Bob drew even and the battle was on. With a high standard of bowling shown by both players, through showers and heavier rain, the result was in the balance until Bob went into the lead and never looked back. He is pictured below after his victory.

Pairs - February 6 to 13

The final of the Pebble Beach Pairs Tournament was played on the 13th of February and saw teams consisting of Phil Lascola and Jerry Healy versus Bob Ferguson and Ray Turman.

The ultimate winners, after a close-fought match which was determined by an extra end when they were tied after 16 ends, were Bob Ferguson and Ray Turman, pictured below.

Triples - Jan 9 to 13

A hard-fought and entertaining game was played on Friday,

Jan 13th between teams comprised of

Joe Dube (Skip), Rick Czachor (Vice)

and Rick Abell (Lead) and

Phil Lascola, Howard Baker and John Bailiff.

The eventual winners were John (Lead), Phil (Skip), and Howard (Vice) pictured below in that order (left to right).

Suncoasters vs Pebble Beach

Lawn Bowling Match -

close challenge by the Ladies.

The Annual Lawn Bowling Challenge match between the lady members of Suncoasters and men members of Pebble Beach Lawn Bowling Clubs was played on Thursday 17^th February. The men had won the 3 previous encounters, so the ladies were hoping for a victory.

Regretfully it was not to be; even though the ladies won 4 of the 6 matches played, their total points (ends won) was 47 for the men 43 for the ladies.

After the match, the players and guests enjoyed food and drink in the clubhouse and Suncoasters president Geri Shayman presented the trophy to the Pebble Beach President David Meixner.

Every year the Suncoasters and Pebble Beach teams play in the West Coast Florida League against Sarasota and Lakeland.

The final match against Sarasota was played at Sun City Center the day before the Challenge match, and the result was a tie, the men and the ladies each winning 8 of their 16 matches.

Unfortunately it was not enough to secure first place, however Sun City Center finished a close second in the league.
